The 8th Annual Gallabrae Highland Games in Greenville, SC were held Memorial Day weekend from Thurs., 5/23 thru Sat. 5/25, on the grounds of beautiful Furman University. The Roberts sisters, Teri & Beth, were our hosts at the Nesbitt/Nisbet tent again this year.
The name or term Gallabrae is a mash-up of two Gallic terms, meaning “ bold and daring” plus “beautiful highlands”. According to their website, “the Saturday Scottish Games kept spinning off so many other events that they realized it was time for a re-branding to more accurately encompass what they had become.” The event has grown to a three day weekend with lots of activities, ending with The Celtic Jam Saturday evening after the Games.
The downtown parade was Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. again. Last year we rode in the parade through the downtown area. The sidewalk areas were lined with people 3 and 4 deep. It's was blast! We decided not to do that again this year, and opted instead to get a jump on the Sponsor’s Dinner. That was fabulous, with carving stations, a loaded banquet table, and live entertainment.
The Games on Saturday were better than the previous year, and we had many N/N relations or friends of them stop by. Teri and Beth did an outstanding job making sure they had all of our Society information. These two sisters certainly make everyone feel welcome in our tent, and we’re sure it will pay off in the future. Our fellow N/N's in attendance were Mary Nesbitt Garrison from SC., and Bill Nisbet and his family from Atlanta, GA.
If you’re looking for a great Scottish event on Memorial Day weekend next year, mark this on your calendar now! It’s the weekend of May 22 - 24, 2014, Thurs. through Sat.
